Walt Durkin - President
Walt grew up in south Florida and learned his love of fishing from his Dad. After a mid-spent youth fishing and playing pool he joined the army as an intelligence officer. Walt returned to Tampa and MacDill AFB in 1998 with his wife Lou. He retired from the military in 2002 and retired full time after another ten years as a counter-terrorism analyst at USCENTCOM. I first started fishing with a bamboo cane pole as a young child with my grandfather in the northwoods of Wisconsin. Over the years I transitioned to a spinning rod, bait caster and finally the fly rod as I continued to challenge myself in the sport. My love for fly fishing has grown as my skills have improved in both fresh and saltwater angling. Joining the TBFFC has provided so many opportunities to meet and fish with other anglers who share the love of fly fishing. The members have readily shared their knowledge and expertise of the sport and have helped me in my quest to become a better caster and angler. The club provides meetings with interesting speakers, casting clinics, fly tying, club trips, and meet ups on the waters of Tampa Bay. I truly enjoy being a part of this group.

The start of my love of fishing was when I grew up fishing in Michigan for Bluegills and Sunfish in ponds near our farm. After I moved to Florida I got hooked on Saltwater fishing and started attending The Tampa Bay Flyfishing Club meetings. I picked up a fly rod for the first time and never looked back. The Flyfishing club has great monthly speakers, organizes workshops, beginners clinics and outings which greatly aided in my instruction. The Club introduced me to a whole new world and a great bunch of likeminded people who enjoy the sport like I do. I enjoy spending my vacations traveling to Flyfishing destinations in the Rocky Mountains the most, but you can find me on the Saltwater flats in the wintertime.

One of the founding members of both the Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Club and Suncoast Fly Fishing Club. Started fly fishing the seawalls of Miami and the Keys in the late 1950’s. Did a little bluegill and largemouth bass fishing in the St. Johns River near Jacksonville during high school and college. Moved to Tampa in 1978 where he met Rick Redd in 1989 who rekindled an interest in fly fishing. Joined the Coastal Conservation Association in 1989 to help improve fishing in the Tampa area. Still a member of the CCA. Been on the board of TBFF for 15 years. Like to travel and flyfish all around the country as well as the Bahamas, Mexico and Cuba. Some of the travelling is on a motorcycle where fly fishing tackle and waders are packed and used whenever possible in different parts of the country. Favorite fish are 1. bonefish in the Bahamas; 2. dolphin in the Keys; 3. trout and reds in Tampa Bay and Wacasassa. Married to Virginia for 39 years; two kids, four grandkids (all of whom like to fish).

I grew up on Florida’s west coast, spending most of my time on or under the water. I water skied, scuba dived and also owned several Hobie Cat sailboats. As I got older, looking for other water activities, i got into fishing. I initially started using spinning gear and quickly stepped up to bait casters. I spent many years chasing snook, redfish and anything else I could catch. About ten years ago, to challenge myself and move beyond my conventional fishing gear, I started fly fishing. My fly casting skills initially progressed slowly, and I usually became frustrated and would quickly switch back to my trusty bait caster. Looking for help to improve my fly fishing skills, a friend invited me to attend Tampa Bay Fly Fishing club meetings. I soon joined the club. At the meetings, I was able to receive several “mini” fly casting lessons. I then honed my skills at several casting clinics sponsored by the Tampa club. I am very comfortable with my fly rods, but I am still learning and improving though experience on the water. I now travel quite a bit with my fly gear to explore new waters and fishes. I now spend about half of my fishing time on the saltwater on my Florida home waters, and half of my time fishing western streams for trout and midwest lakes for muskie and smallmouth bass.
